Four years ago, at the age of 19, one girl single-handedly tarnished the reputation of the charity sector in China. She became one of the most infamous women in the country and, at the same time, pulled back the curtain on the nation’s modern mistress culture. A few days ago, that same girl, Guo Meimei, now 24 – whose name has since become synonymous with the immoral pursuit of wealth – made national headlines again.
China’s popular Sina News ran a live update of court proceedings, as she was tried on charges of operating an illegal gambling den. She was sentenced on the same day to five years in prison.

 A teenager in 2011, Guo Meimei caused one of the biggest scandals of the social media era when it was noticed that her account on Weibo (the popular Chinese platform) listed her as ‘Commercial General Manager of the Red Cross Society of China’ – one of the biggest (and government backed) charities.Pictures on her ‘Guo Meimei Baby’ profile showed a doll-eyed young girl driving a white Maserati and displaying her designer handbag collection. Her Weibo account revealed a Paris Hilton-a-like; vulgar but pretty normal for a Chinese fuerdai – the offspring of China’s nouveau riche .
