The country, Nepal is the mountainous nation that has included eight of the worlds ten tallest mountains, including the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest. More than 240 peaks over 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sea level are located in Nepal. The southern Terai region is fertile and humid. Nepal is divided into three physiographic areas: Mountain, Hill and Terai. The country practices Hinduism by about 81.3% of Nepalis, the highest percentage of any country. Buddhism is linked historically with Nepal and is practiced by 9% of its people, followed by Islam at 4.4%, Kiratism 3.1%, Christianity 1.4%, and animism 0.4%.

A large portion of the population, especially in the hill region, may identify themselves as both Hindu and Buddhist, which can be attributed to the syncretic nature of both faiths in Nepal. Around 76% of the total population is engaged in the agriculture. About 33 % of the total income is fulfilled by the agriculture. The Diocese of Norwichs Lent Project in 2011 is to train Nepalese young people to become "Nurses for Nepal" and to buy a vehicle to use for a mobile medical ambulance.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries of the world and has no national health service. It is also estimated that 2 nurses are available for 10, 000 patients. It means that the hospitals, doctors and nurses have denied many poor people, and with only 2 nurses for every 10,000 people, health-care is very limited. Norfolk-based childrens charity Morning Star is launching a project this month to train nurses in Nepal from money raised from people giving things up for Lent. The Give it up for Lent campaign is backed by the Diocese of Norwich. Wendy Bircham who runs Morning Star Children’s Charity Nepal, a home for 49 orphaned or destitute children in Kathmandu, is thrilled that the Diocese have chosen this project to focus on.
